#WWYW2READ: Start your story with the line, “Three more days of this.”

Start your story with the line, “Three more days of this.”

Three more days of this.

From afar, the house resembled my own; curtains drawn, garden of blooming flowers in front and a thriving vegetable patch in back. I assumed spending a weekend here would help with planning a yoga retreat for a reunion of distant classmates and friends. We haven’t seen or heard from one another for about five years.

This house, the Gilmore Steep, or so the neighbours eagerly informed me the morning after I parked moving vans stacked to the brim with green, durable Frogbox storage boxes on the sidewalk.

The story behind its name still remains a mystery to me as I couldn’t dig any truths from the people I’ve met, but the real question (well, to me at least) is: what happened to the late tenants? The sudden death of a family of five haunts me, my soul as I torture my brain to figure something up. Nothing clicks, none of it adds up.

I poked and nudged the neighbours and real estate agents until their hairs stood on end and even then all refrained to provide any insight, but one. A slender male in his forties who spends his days chopping wood and cutting down trees and his nights writing poetry by the noisy television. I admire his character based on the stories I heard the night I hosted a house-warming weeks ago. At first, I only caught a glimpse of his portrait but later that night, a stranger I could not recognize pointed him out and essentially shared his life story. I wasn’t one to judge but he blended so well with the tree trunk in his brown tee-shirt that I could’ve sworn his body became an camoflaged reflection of someone who was, but no longer remains a part of this world.

Fast forward to tonight, I worked out a deal with the neighbouring home owners on both sides of the one I stand in. We came to a consensus. But now, I wait.

Three more days of this, I tell myself. Only three more days.

I keep replaying the memory of myself leaving my own apartment in the core of Downtown Vancouver. Leaving behind a notebook and a pen.

My short-term memory dominated and even forgot to bring the jacket I had slouched on the back of my favourite chair by the door. The shortened version of Sherlock Holmes I intended to bring along on this three day experiment has already gone downhill. Within minutes, I can only sit back and stare out the window. Beyond the darkness, I couldn’t much, not even the slender male who lives across the street.

Should I initiate a conversation with this man, of whom I will refer to as James from this point onwards. There is something different in James that I don’t see anything comparable in anyone else in this neighbourhood. At first, I couldn’t pinpoint the root cause but with time, I began to feel an electrifying connection, one that resembles the connection I felt with my late parents. They died a horrific death, an accident. One that shouldn’t have even happened.

I can’t do this any more.

My breath quickens.

I need to calm down.

I need to gulp down a breath of fresh air, helium, oxygen as much as my throat is resisting the swallow.

I need familiarity.

I need the companion of someone that knows me better than myself.

Who do I turn to on this lonely, starry night.

I can almost see the end.

#WWYW2READ: Write a story that starts at the end.

The couple stood up from the bench and walked off into the sunset. The exfoliating sensation of sand brushed against their skill. Their wedding papers signed and neatly framed lay in their suitcase by their feet. The plane they got off leaves the terminal and heads into the clouds, white and fluffy. The dress purchased at the fashion boutique owned by Chloe Jacob wait patiently, steamed, absorbing the lavender scent wafting through the air. Her shoes scuff against the hardwood floor, dirt piled by the door mat, staining the rug temporarily decorating the room and concealing the aged creaky floorboards underneath. A motion stirs, the dog awakes, and alas, he glances her way.

read it forwards, backwards.

does it still make sense?

The Burning Question Series: What’s one dumb thing that you used to believe in?

Q: What’s one dumb thing that you used to believe in?

instead, i’ll admit two silly things i used to believe in.

one: that knitting is a sport for grannies – when i discovered wool and the gang knitting kits, i discovered a treasure chest: experimenting with new stitches, working on tension, but it was colourful yarn that sealed the deal. browse through my archives for images. website: woolandthegang.com and on twitter: @woolandthegang

second: that DIY (do it yourself) beauty recipes calling for coconut oil, beeswax, and more are safe for all skin types and won’t somehow mysteriously and magically not cause sensitive skin reactions.

WRONG again. i might be allergic to coconut oil or my eating habits as of late may be the cause but something has caused a sudden explosion of breakouts, scared me frighteningly. Whatever it is, I’ve decided to put my skin regime on hold and decided to revert to previously tried and tested products that actually, you guessed it, work.

now, you, my reader, anything you’d like to admit?

words that arouse, spring life and thought.

paraphrased lessons/excerpts of wisdom from a few recent reads:

a great interview: short, blow-your-mind-away intro, refer to guest’s work/writing/interviews/actions, back-up question (always), and ask “how’d you feel when…”

to focus: take a day to yourself and think of priorities, passions, and what excites you, pushes you further, makes you happy and excited

now, on internships: ask about job/duties/expected of you/for permission to do ___/for reimbursement in money or goods/services, tell them what you can do/commit to, trust peopl, give what you have to offer, and be creative with ideas and solutions.

a better you: work with people smarter than you are, ask for opinions from range of wise people, ask the experts, embrace silence, and rid yourself of negativity (or a negative person)

response to the infamous “i don’t know….” is: i’ll figure it out

to confront anxiety: ask yourself why exactly you feel the way you do

on time management: ignore emails on productive days dedicated to working, writing, reading, studying, you know it. relax day and loose-ends day, hurrah.

how to apologize: short, defenceless, express real emotions/thoughts/feelings, allow the other party to speak their mind.

to acts of bad manners: call them out, always

stop hoping. instead, realize what you’ve done thus far. realize what you want and what awaits you.

thank in advance, you never know when the next opportunity knocks

motivations are temporary, be inspired permanently.

if nothing else, say one phrase: “thank you. i won’t let you down” PS: that video that ripped my heart open, so touching. so innocent, raw, full of emotion.

that’s all for tonight, readers.

I am liking these excerpts posts more and more. It’s a great way for me to keep what I’ve read in my mind and for you, my readers, to read some interesting facts and opinions without having to read an entire article. I always thought highly of my ability to fish out highlight-worthy notes in an essay, paragraph, etc so hopefully you find these excerpts funny, info-packed, and helpful in some way.

The following excerpts from: http://cathypresland.com/category/blog/

  1. Identify HOW you are different from everyone else around you. Why is your yellow different? Why is the Blackberry a better choice for me?
  2. And make sure you explain that difference. What’s obvious to you really isn’t obvious to everyone.”

Set a time limit. If you have a list of calls then set a limit for the whole batch. Then set a limit for the call. If you tend to talk a lot (and this was Brad’s advice), say clearly, “I just wanted to give you a quick call before I go into a meeting at 3 o’clock“. This will immediately relax the person you are calling because they know you aren’t going to keep them for an hour. It also sets up a sense of scarcity – thus raising your perceived value and the likelihood they will want to hire you!”

The following excerpts from Felicia Lee: http://www.candeo.ca/blog/#

Felicia’s Unofficial Guide To Build A Lab In Your Business:

  1. Allocate a certain percentage of your business resources (time, budget, and manpower) to try “a new thing”.  “A new thing” could be anything: a new marketing tactic, a new technology, a new channel of business, a new product, a new way of packaging existing products or services, or a new way of doing business.  It can be something that is a little innovative in your business, or a lot (it’s really up to you).
  2. Create a timeline to implement, test, and measure results.
  3. Incorporate the ideas that worked, don’t worry about the ones that didn’t.
  4. Collect feedback and repeat.”

don’t focus on the “doing”, focus on the “being” when you’re meeting with a potential champion:

  • be curious about who they are and what they do
  • care about where they are and where they want to go
  • enjoy the discovery process
  • have a bit of fun (note: lawyer jokes are funny when told by introverted lawyers with a slight self-deprecating humor)”

“ When you visit Costco, have you noticed that discount coupons are more effective when paired with sampling?  Give me a chance to try your product at no risk, and if I like it, then give me a reason to buy now with the discount.”

The following excerpts from: http://professorannlee.com/?page_id=105

“The U.S. government encourages outsourcing through its free trade and tax policies without simultaneously enforcing labor standards around the world.  If corporations abuse labor in the States, we all condemn them.  But when corporations such as Apple exploit people in other countries by hiring intermediaries such as Foxconn, Americans worship Steve Jobs as a hero. Stockholders love the high profit margins, and consumers love the low prices.  In the meantime, we blame China for our loss of jobs.  There is inherent hypocrisy in this line of argument.  We need to understand how we are all connected and that we need to work for a better world for all.”

“Pushing China to raise labor standards should be a higher priority than Obama’s big to-do with counterfeit goods.  Putting pressure on China to raise labor standards would be better for American workers as well.”

recent reads: 23 excerpts from @robertsmurray blog posts

Robert Murray’s blog: http://robert-murray.com/blog/ and his twitter: @robertsmurray.

Here are twenty-three excerpts from his recent blog posts (refresher for me, too):

1. “Find a reason to give it everything you have to give – everyday. Dispense your energy to everyone that needs it freely and without expectation.”

2. “Be humble and give away the credit. Going before others is only part of leading; you have to go with them too. Therefore, they’ve got to want you around!”

3. “Learn to love ideas and experiments. Turn them into pilot programs that preface impulsive decisions. Everything was impossible until the first person did it.”

4. “Believe that beauty exists in everything and in everyone, and then go about finding it. You’ll be amazed how little you have to invent and much is waiting to be displayed.”

5. “Actively reject pessimism and be an optimist. Say you have zero tolerance for negativity and self-fulfilling prophecies of doubt, and mean it.”

6. “…catching people doing things right, it is going to take a mind shift on your part and a higher level of consciousness.  You have to be acutely aware of what is going on around you and when you see something that is good from your people, tell them so.”

7. “When both sides in a negotiation win, they both understand not only what is in it for themselves but they work very hard at trying to understand what is in it for the other party as well… I spend most of the discovery period trying hard to understand what my counterpart needs to be successful and uncovering as much information as I can.  I ask over and over again for them to describe “What good looks like to them.”  I even ask them to draw it out onto a white board for me.  Only after I completely understand what they need do I work to weave what they need into what I need.”

8. “Walking away.  Sometimes, you need to politely suggest that there does not appear to be anything that can be achieved and to walk away.”they rarely sit down and work on building a lasting trust bond with the prospective client – building a deep, meaningful and lasting relationship with them.  Understanding their pain and earning the client’s trust that they can solve that pain.”

9. ”You cannot have two different sets of rules that you govern yourself by.  If you do, you will not have lasting happiness and success.  By knowing your values and staying true to them always – even if it means that you may lose a promotion or a quick dollar – you will achieve a sense of peace that alludes most people in the world today.”

10. “The other key is to be ware of the politics that are being played around you.  The simple awareness of politics is usually all you need to protect yourself from the side effects of the games that political players can cause.”

11. “Well, great businesses today focus on being great at something that no one else can do…They have a single minded focus on being better at their area of market advantage than anyone else.  They DO NOT try to be all things to all people….All it takes is figuring out what your greatness is, and paying attention to every single little detail in the delivery of that greatness so that it is flawless every single time!”

12. “being comfortable enough as a leader to show my teams and my partners that I am human and that I can be counted on to make mistakes, learn, grow and become stronger.”

13. “I believe in authenticity.  It is one of my core values.  I believe that leaders, or any other person for that matter, will find true happiness in life when they strive to “be themselves” always.  Authenticity is a true liberator to living your life with love in your heart.  Living your life while always be true to your values – Even when you are under tremendous pressure to do something against your values – allows you to love yourself.  When you have a true love for yourself and what  you represent as a person, you are way better at loving other people. “

14. “No ‘trash talking.’  Ever.  Talking poorly about customers, fellow employees or competitors only weakens your personal brand and your business.”

15. “Great business people talk about ideas with benefits – NOT products.”

16. “Successful sales people are amongst the highest paid professionals in the world.  The ones that are the most fulfilled are the ones that take personal ownership of any problem a customer has.”

17. “The road to becoming a great leader is full of people that help support you and your plan.  It is impossible to do it alone.  Make a vow to never forget the support you have received and make a second vow to support as many people as you can with their journeys through your time, resources, energy and love.”

18. “As a leader, are you famous for engaging employees, leading start-up’s or rescuing failing businesses? The key is to focus.  Be the best there is anywhere at a particular, single thing.”

19. “I am convinced that there is no such thing as perfect when it comes to planning.  Why?  Because there is always something that can be improved upon.  Always.  When you stress about perfect, you cannot help but be late to the market…As a leader, when you are demanding perfect, you will never get anything done and you will find yourself looking for work.  Get good at “good” and watch your business grow.”

20. “Top performing sales people the world over are never in the office in the middle of the day and bottom performers always go for lunch together.  I guess they find comfort in the mediocrity of the company they find themselves in.  It may make them feel better. Top performers in any field are always stretching and growing by doing different things including hanging out with a constantly changing and challenging group of people.  They are loyal, don’t get me wrong, to their friends and family, however, they keep growing by seeing different people.”

21. “

- Under react to a crisis and over react to values abuses
- Listen first, ask questions, listen some more and then act
- Remove drama and emotion completely from the equation
- Follow a model to help you be replicable.”

22. “the answers have always been there.  Buried in the depths of our sub-conscious.  The deepest recess of our mind is a very powerful computer processor that is capable of solving the most complex problems with lightening speed.  The issue however, is that our conscious minds are so full of clutter with issues and stressors that we cannot hear the answers coming at us from the sub-conscious brain.”

23. “Burn the first image you see everyday into your mind and vow to pay attention to cool things that are virtually all around us.  A blind friend of mine once told me that she really didn’t start seeing until she lost her eyesight.  What she meant was that she finally became conscious. “

The Burning Question Series: What’s your purpose for money?

Q: What’s your purpose for money??

My purpose for money. By Jenny. Feb. 2012.

YES to ingesting flavourful spices, vitamins, fruits, and veggies. Close-to-home gourmet chef and farmer fresh kind.

YES to designing and knitting ageless classic pieces while grounded ethically. Originality holds priority, and fit, too.

Taste the savourable, buy the fashionable, slather on the toxic-free, support the entrepreneurial and better yet, those with social causes.

Gifts to friends and family needs no reasons.

Invest in knowledge, relationships: time, commit.

knitted: scarf knitted with moss stitch in WATG (Wool and the Gang) Crazy Sexy Wool in Tweed Gray

Late last night, I stayed up to knit another Wool and the Gang Zion Lion hat to gift a dear friend for her birthday.

But this morning, I decided to try out a new stitch for the first time: the moss stitch.

I had to redo the casting on stage and first ten rows at least a dozen times before I finally got the hang of the seed/moss stitch for knitting.

…and voila! I tweeted photos of the project while working on it earlier today.

photo 3

There is the recap.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a perfectly good shot of the scarf but if this friend wears it next time, I’ll be sure to snap a photo.

Since I was having so much fun,  I created a new hashtag for twitter for every time I tweet a knitting related update: #jenyvrknits

Anyway, I decided to continue with the moss stitch and ended up creating a scarf almost measuring one metre in length (or longer).

Until my next #jenyvrknits update,

It’s a dear friend’s birthday party tomorrow and I have no idea why I am still up at 5AM in the morning!

But, I did put together a small gift for this special friend. Pssst: it took almost 6 hours to complete!

Here’s a snippet of the project:

The Burning Question Series: How Do You Want It To Feel?

Planet Earth keeps rotating around its axis even when you aren’t feeling your best.

Businesses keep operating even when you’ve maxed out your budget and haven’t got extra pennies to spend on luxury goods or necessities.

People keep breathing and moving about even when we want everything around us to just stop for a second or two so we can catch up.

Is this what you are feeling on this mild yet on-the-brink of gloomy Friday?

If that is the case then you might want to take it upon yourself to answer the following question.

Q: How Do You Want It To Feel?

It can relate to your well-being, career, hobbies, interests, friends, and family. Let your thoughts be read and let out everything you’ve bottled inside for much too long.

I want my day to feel like absorbing sunshine at the park – absorbing knowledge and enjoying every moment.

I want my writing to feel like acing a major exam.

I want brainstorming ideas to feel electrifying and giddy with excitement..

I want my baking to feel like gourmet dishes served on delicately decorated plates.

I want my knitting to feel like creating the next Oscar De La Renta (PS: oscarprgirl.tumblr.com) masterpieces.

I want my sewing to feel like racing to the finish line in bright colours and frills.

I want my goals to feel like benchmarks of my success.

I want studying to feel like attending a sold-out Carrie Underwood (which I attended in Vancouver Dec. 16 2010) concert.

Handmade by me.

Took six hours last night with breaks while watching the Vancouver Canucks vs Nashville Predators hockey game.

We won, if you’re curious, 4-3.

Six rounds of shoot-outs.

Luongo (Canucks goaltender) stuck his left leg a few times in the air: epic.

Thinking of folding the ends upwards of this scarf (20 stitches, and garter stitches until about arm’s length of yarn left) to make the ends into little pockets for my ipod, cell phone, pen, or highlighter for school.

Thoughts?

Knitting pattern designer, hmm, i think that’s in the books for me.

More knitting to come.

Spring 2012 Side Project Update 1

Eeek!

I finally completed my first knitting project: Wool and the Gang Zion Lion Hat (photo below, woolandthegang.com, woolandthegang.tumblr.com, @woolandthegang on twitter)

How do I feel?

Floating on layers of fluffy clouds. Might make more sense after you read this: HERE. Yes, I’m an introvert. I like quiet time. Knitting is relaxing, will be trying to customize this pattern for a smaller head: the little brother.

The best part?

I finished within a day, huge accomplishment.

Here’s a photo:

Though the photo is low-quality, wasn’t meant for much besides to share this wonderful news.

Now that I’ve worked my way through this first project, time to work on my technique. Who knows, you might start seeing a customized version of this on sale on this blog!

Anyone interested? Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas for design inspiration.

UPDATE: thanks to my mama who showed me a way to make this hat look even better. Oh and I didn’t find the knitter’s needle that supposedly came with this kit so I managed with another but with some difficulty (the wool kept snapping on me.)

Keep the notes coming.
