Under the Microscope: Mulondon Organic Rose Moisturizer

Yeap, the same @Mulondon I’ve tweeted the last week of December 2011. 2011 is ‘So Yesterday’ as Hilary Duff, former Disney star turned writer, once chanted.

This is my first time purchasing from Mulondon and I chose the Organic Rose Moisturizer.

Quite the wait to get it shipped from London, UK to BC, Canada – 11 days.

Jar appeared smaller than I expected but it’s 60 mL and that’s what it says on the website – no surprise there.

Product is thick, rather dry, yet not as strongly scented as I thought it’d be. This is good news because my mum is allergic to fragrances and my sister has eczema.

Greasiness is a sign that one has applied too much. Problem is: the consistency. Over-application becomes easy with a product that doesn’t spread easily and stiff as it is. I tend to slather on more when I feel there isn’t enough to last the day. Must have over-done it many times. I went through the jar rather quickly.

I prefer a liquid consistency. Just personal preference.

I was sick with the cold for a week or two and attempted to use the product as a substitute for Vaseline (petroleum-based, bad for skin!) and it didn’t work as well as I hoped. Instead, I began slathering some of Karen’s Botanicals Soothing Calendula Rose Cream (karensbotanicals.com) that I purchased from Mint the Berry (mintandberry.com) - the absolute best selection of natural beauty products suitable for the entire family – of which Charmaine Leah of Glamology.com is the owner about a year back but haven’t had a chance to experience and review it. I’m so glad I did! More on it below…

The Mulondon Rose Moisturizer contains a generous amount of product stored in a glass jar, easy to spot on the bathroom counter and takes minimal effort to apply. Simply swipe your finger into the jar, pick up some product and dab over the face and/or body. Once you’re done just dab the product you previously placed on your skin and begin to dab in a circular motion to get the product into surrounding areas. Spreading it so thin so that ‘less becomes more’.

My sister with eczema claims this is her favourite face cream that I’ve ever purchased or invested in, if you will. Her sensitive skin has encountered many products I’ve carefully researched and bought over the Internet. For most, she’s encountered an allergic reaction to, most likely, a chemical hiding in the product mixed into all the good stuff – such as jojoba oil, olive oil, argan oil, Moroccan oil, etc.

The Karen’s Botanicals Soothing Calendula Rose Cream, however, has more colourful, lively packaging. Plastic jar labeled with details of the product, ingredients, and instructions scripted in a much fancier than necessary font that became difficult to read.

The product is essentially a white cream with a floating layer of olive oil swimming in the jar. I hesitated to slather this all over my face and body as it’s quite oily and leaves a shiny residue patch on my skin. I prefer to dab this stuff on just before bed or on days where I know I can spend a good five hours in front of my textbooks or the TV prior to heading out.

I typically avoid the bath of olive oil in the jar and hold the jar at a forty-five degree angle so that the liquid portions flows to one side and reach my finger into the jar to pick up some of the cream with my finger. I’m not certain if the cream is deliberately separated from the oil (as water separates from oil) and I have not contacted the company (or Karen) for further details. if you decide to do so, feel free to share that information with us.

It might have been my immune system. It might have been the chicken soup I’ve drunk. Or it might have been this product. My sinuses cleared up after applying a moderate layer of this stuff around my nose and on dry, dehydrated spots on my face after cleansing one evening. I woke up feeling my best. I’m forever grateful as it allowed me to enjoy an (almost) normal day at school.

In short:

Mulondon’s Organic Rose Moisturizer is better suited for people with sensitive skin and concentrated dry areas on the face and body. It complements the winter months, chillier weather, stronger winds yet equally suitable for application in the other three seasons: use a thinner layer aka less product. Great for travel as it’s compact and plenty of product to get you through at least a month or two – dependent on usage. I’ve used the 60 mL jar for about a month and about three-quarters of the jar remains.

I purchased this product at Mulondon’s online store. (mulondon.com, @mulondon)

Karen’s Botanicals Soothing Calendula Rose Cream, again, complements and provides moisture on concentrated dry areas on the skin (face and body) as that is how I used it myself. Light cream that leaves an oily residue on skin. Stronger scent than Mulondon Rose Moisturizer.
